The City has undertaken a project to replace the older bulb style traffic signals with new, energy efficient LED automatic signals. One of the characteristics of the LED signals is the fact that they generate little internal heat. As a result, during some winter weather, the lighted areas of the automatic signal may be completely obscured by snow. When this occurs, drivers are asked to do what the Indiana Drivers Manual and Indiana law (IC 9-21-3-7) requires: Stop at the intersection, yield to cross traffic and then proceed with caution.

Many times the actions of drivers operating in the other directions can be a clue as to what the light is signaling, however it is imperative that drivers stop and survey the intersection for potential hazards. It may be some time before these situation can be remedied, especially in instances of very severe weather.

In a related winter subject: Private snow plow drivers, businesses and residents are reminded that plowing snow onto city streets while clearing private property is itself illegal by City Ordinance and violators can face a $25.00 fine per occurrence as well as face other fees if the City is forced to clear the snow.
