A Decade of Officers Down December 29, 2009

flickr- ebrackley photoAccording to an article on Policeone.com, the Officer Down Memorial Page indicates that 1644 law enforcement officers have perished in the line of duty in the past ten years, an average of nearly 165 per year.

This is sadly a staggering number of officers who are killed, on average, nationally per year. As a department that has lost two officers this decade, even one officer is a tremendous loss by that agency, its officer, their families, and the community. Police funerals are tragic in and of themselves, and sadly the loss tends to be quickly forgotten by the citizens on a day to day basis, but that officer’s loss stays with the agency and the officers involved permanently.

For now, we take a moment to pause, reflect and or pray to remember the men and women who gave it all in service to their communities. They will never be forgotten.

• In 2000, there were 163 line of duty deaths
• In 2001, there were 242 line of duty deaths
• In 2002, there were 159 line of duty deaths
• In 2003, there were 147 line of duty deaths
• In 2004, there were 164 line of duty deaths
• In 2005, there were 164 line of duty deaths
• In 2006, there were 156 line of duty deaths, including SBPD officer Scott Severns
• In 2007, there were 193 line of duty deaths, including SBPD officer Nick Polizzotto
• In 2008, there were 138 line of duty deaths
• In 2009, there were 118 (as of 12/22) line of duty deaths

We hope that 2010 continues to be better year for keeping officers safe and alive. In a job where most things are uncertain, numbers like this this serve as a permanent reminder that Law Enforcement is a deadly profession and the loss nationwide remained constant through this decade. Let’s hope 2010 starts off as a decade of sharp decline.

My heart goes out to all the families who lost their loved ones. Being a Police Officer is an honorable proffession which takes a certain type of person. We should all remember that and have respect for them and their dedication. God Bless and watch over all of you in the coming year!
